Ferrari Graveyard: Video of 14 supercar pile-up in Japan

Dec. 5 (Bloomberg) -- Eight Ferraris and a Lamborghini were part of a 14-car crash in Japan yesterday that wrecked more than a million dollars worth of vehicles.
“The accident occurred when the driver of a red Ferrari was switching from the right lane to the left and skidded,” said Mitsuyoshi Isejima, executive officer for Yamaguchi Prefecture’s Expressway Traffic Police unit. “It was a gathering of narcissists.” The drivers were aged between 37 and 60 years old, he said.

Eight Ferraris and a Lamborghini were among the vehicles involved in a chain collision of luxury cars on a Japanese expressway Sunday. They'd been heading to a motor festival in Hiroshima.

The person suspected of causing the accident, a 60-year-old self-employed man from Fukuoka prefecture, may face up to three months in jail or a fine of as much as 100,000 yen ($1,280), said Isejima. The accident included a Ferrari F-360 that costs more than 18 million yen. It took longer than six hours to clear the highway of wreckage, Isejima said.
TV footage showed a Ferrari that had plowed into the outer guard rail, while another one had its engine bonnet almost ripped off.

Ferrari SpA, a unit of Fiat SpA, sold 493 cars in Japan last year, down from 548 in 2009, according to the website of the Japan Automobile Importers Association. All eight Ferraris involved in the accident were registered in Kyushu, police said. Miki Kataoka, a spokeswoman for Ferrari in Japan, declined to comment on the crash.

Custom Japenese Scooters

Japanese Custom Vans are Insane

In the States, "pimping out" your vehicle generally involves adding oversized subwoofers, gaudy rims and stupid- looking ground effects kits and spoilers. It's a masculine, masturbatory affair that I never quite understood the appeal of.

In Japan, they like to pimp out vans. It's no less masturbatory, but it's certainly not as masculine. Check out the above van, modified to look like some sort of spaceship from the planet Little Girl. There are more examples in the gallery below, including models dedicated to pop stars and more cartoon characters. Oh, Japan, you're so crazy but I can't help but love you anyway.

Most of these vans have "800 class" registration, which is a designation for camping and oversized vehicles. The "800" appears on the plates next to the prefectural Shaken office name which releases the license tags.

The only requirement is that mechanical parts are a minimum of 9 cm from the ground while bodykits and overhang sizes don't really matter. The kind of people that drive these vans are known as "Yankees," who are usually rebellious and individualistic types that strive to be uniquely different from the masses.
